1. GETTING TO AND ENTERING THE EVENT

Although it is possible for someone using a wheelchair to use each of the three entrances to the festival, the ACCESS ENTRANCE is the most accessible. The Access Entrance is located on the north side of the festival at 36th and JFK Driver. Enter Golden Gate Park at 36th and Fulton. Muni bus #5 stops at Fulton and 36th, about a quarter of a mile from the Access Entrance. Follow 36th to JFK Drive and look for signs with the wheelchair symbol to indicate location of the Access Entrance. Vehicles, including paratransit vehicles, are allowed to pull up and DROP OFF patrons at the Access Entrance. Near this entrance there are a limited number of accessible PARKING spots available to those who have the government-issued accessible parking tag, placard, or plate. We strongly encourage car-pooling and using public transportation. If using an Outside Lands SHUTTLE, note that they drop off at the South Entrance which, while paved, has an approximate tenth of a mile uphill approach leading up to the park, followed by a shorter but fairly steep hill down to the Polo Field, quite close to the Main Stage reserved viewing platform for patrons with mobility disabilities. If this would be difficult consider using the northern Access Entrance.

 

2. NEW THIS YEAR: ACCESS CENTER

Stop by the Access Center, located just inside the Access Entrance at 36TH and JFK Drive. We will give you the most up-to-date access information.

 

3. TERRAIN

Outside Lands is an outdoor festival, taking place at Golden Gate Park in the Polo Field, Hellman Hollow and Lindley Meadow. This is a large venue with great distances between stages. The length of the event is a little more than half a mile. Most travel is done over natural terrain of mowed grass, occasional sand, some packed-earth pathways and a few paved paths. The most difficult aspect of travel in this park is that there are some steep changes in elevation.

 

Despite the difficult terrain, many people who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices come prepared and are able to attend and enjoy Outside Lands.

 

4. VIEWING

At Land’s End, Sutro, and Twin Peaks stages, raised viewing platforms are reserved for people who use wheelchairs, or who have a mobility disability that would make it very difficult to stand in the audience. One companion may accompany the person with the mobility disability. Families who have one or more member with a disability may stay together on the platform. “Family” is defined as two adults and any children less than 18 years of age. Please note that these areas have limited capacity and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The festival provides folding chairs and makes every attempt to provide enough for everyone on the platform. 

 

5. NEW THIS YEAR: GETTING TO SUTRO AND THE BARBARY

The direct path of travel from the main venue to the Sutro Stage and its viewing platform and the Barbary, both in Lindley Meadow, is via a steep hill with a sandy path. A roundabout but more accessible way to get to Lindley Meadow is to go out the Access Entrance, and enter the festival again through the JFK entrance. Stop by the Access Center to get more information about the route.

 

6. POWER WHEELCHAIRS, SCOOTERS, AND OTHER DEVICES

WHAT’S ALLOWED: Only those who have mobility disabilities may use mobility devices. Power wheelchairs and three or four-wheeled scooters are allowed for use by people with mobility disabilities.

 

WHAT’S NOT ALLOWED: Outside Lands is a crowded event. For safety reasons, powered mobility devices that move faster than a walking speed, or are heavier and larger than a wheelchair or scooter, including two-wheeled scooters, golf carts, or all-terrain vehicles, are NOT allowed.

 

OTHER DEVICES: Other types of mobility devices will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. To ask permission to bring a powered mobility device other than a wheelchair or scooter, contact info@sfoutsidelands.com no later than one week before the event.

Outside Lands personnel may ask individuals using an other type of power-driven mobility device for a credible assurance such as a valid Federal or State-issued proof of disability, that the device is required because of a disability.

 

RECHARGING CHAIRS AND SCOOTERS: If you need a boost to get through the day, stop by the Medical Tent.

 

7. TOILETS

Accessible portable toilets are located in every cluster of portable toilets and near to each raised viewing platform.

9. QUESTIONS OR ASSISTANCE

Pre-fest, write to info@sfoutsidelands.com and include “Access” in the subject line. During event, stop by the Access Center by the Access Entrance, or contact any of our Festival Staff members and they will be happy to help you. Access Staff are positioned at each accessible viewing platform. Post-fest, send your comments and suggestions to info@sfoutsidelands.com.

 

10. SPECIAL REQUESTS

People with disabilities may request accommodations for services not listed. Please write to info@sfoutsidelands.com, as soon as possible. We may not be able to accommodate last minute requests.

 

11. ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES

AVAILABLE AT LANDS END AND TWIN PEAKS STAGES – RESERVATIONS NEEDED: Patrons who are hard of hearing may wish to check out an assistive listening device (ALD). An ALD is a small receiver with ear buds or headphones that picks up the sound from the sound system and allows the individual to adjust the volume to his or her liking. Outside Lands uses FM assistive listening systems. ALDs may be checked out at the Lands End, Sutro, and Twin Peaks reserved viewing platforms. Make reservations by writing to info@sfoutsidelands.com with as much notice as possible. Note whether or not you use a hearing aid with a telecoil and include your cell phone number. There is no fee to use the ALD but photo ID and a deposit of $100 by check or credit card is required to ensure return of the device. The deposit will be returned when the device is returned. Those who are not able to provide the deposit should notify Outside Lands and request an alternative type of deposit.

 

12. SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER SERVICE

Because it takes quite a lot of time to study and practice to interpret the music we ask for as much advance notice as possible. We may not be able to fulfill last minute requests. Email info@sfoutsidelands.com with your request or to see if there already is an ASL schedule in place. Or stop by the Access Center during the event to check on what may be scheduled.

 

13. SERVICE AND SUPPORT ANIMAL POLICIES & PROCEDURES

 

ANIMALS THAT ARE NOT ALLOWED: Pets.
 
ANIMALS THAT ARE ALLOWED: Service dogs or miniature horses and support animals. Only people with disabilities, as defined by federal or state law, may bring their animal and only if it helps them with their disability.
 
ASSISTIVE ANIMAL CHECK-IN: At each entrance, animals and their handlers must check in with and be screened by security. A band will be applied to the animal’s leash, harness, or carrier showing that it has gone through check-in. We also take the name of the handler and cell phone number so that the animal and handler can be reunited if they are separated from each other and if festival staff finds the animal. Yes, this does happen and we are happy to bring you back together.
 
Handlers need not fear the check-in process. It will be conducted with respect and understanding and once your animal has received the tag indicating it has been screened, staff are not likely to question you again unless the animal causes a problem. Those bringing pets will be turned away.
 
REQUIREMENTS: The animal and handler must adhere to the following conditions or staff will have the handler remove the animal from the site. The handler must take the animal somewhere safe and not leave it in a vehicle. Then the handler may return without the animal.
 
- The animal must be well behaved and must not be disruptive or threaten the health or safety of any person or other animal.


- The animal must be under the control of its handler at all times. All animals must remain by the handler’s side at all times and must be harnessed, leashed, tethered, or in a carrier unless these devices interfere with the animal’s work or the individual’s disability prevents using these devices. In that case, the individual must maintain control of the animal through voice, signal, or other effective controls.


- Animals must be housebroken and the handler must pick up after the animal (persons who are blind are exempt from this requirement).
 
SERVICE ANIMALS IN TRAINING: Per California law, a trainer or person with a disability may bring his or her dog that is in training to be a guide, signal or service dog. The person shall ensure that the dog is on leash and tagged as a guide dog, signal dog, or service dog by an identification tag issued by the county clerk or animal control department. In addition, the person shall be liable for any provable damage done to the premises or facilities by his or her dog.
 
SPECIAL NOTE: We have been advised that young puppies do not yet have the maturity to attend an event like this. Service animals in training should be advanced enough in their training to handle an event as intense as Outside Lands.
 
STILL THINKING OF BRINGING YOUR PET? If you fraudulently represent yourself as being the owner or trainer of a guide, signal, or service dog, you are guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment and/or fine. A festival is crowded, noisy, confusing, and can be stressful for animals. If an animal is lost in the crowd of thousands of people, we don’t know if you will find it again or who will take it home. If an animal causes injury or death of any guide, signal, or service dog, the handler or owner may be ordered to make restitution for any veterinary bills and/or replacement costs of that dog. Service animals can be valued at many thousands of dollars.
 
YOUR ANIMAL, YOUR RESPONSIBILITY: Anyone bringing an animal to Outside Lands will be responsible for and liable for any damage or injury caused by the animal.
