San Francisco's Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival - August 22-24, 2008

Block-rocking, system-knocking, lyrical-gun-cocking hip-hop funkateers The Coup capture the collisions between economics and everyday life, the political and the personal. In the midst of a 15-year career that has defined the word "uncompromising", The Coup will hit the stage at Outside Lands armed with bigger funk and taller tales.  Frontman Boots Riley’s exquisitely literate hip-hop humanism makes the everyday seem heroic and the heroic seem everyday. Not since Soviet lads and lasses sang passionately to their tractors has the proletariat been as nakedly idealized as it is in The Coup’s music.  Revolutions may not be televised, but they do need a good musical soundtrack. Boots is more than just a fiery orator, he's a powerful composer who adds the funk to the mix to make his words stick.
