ECO LANDS - POWERED BY YOU
Eco Lands, situated in the heart of Speedway Meadow across from Wine
Lands and 100% powered by alternative energy, will be the focal point
of the Outside Lands’ sustainability mission and environmental commitment
for the 4th year in a row. Outside Lands has continually raised the
bar of sustainable events and will once again challenge our attendees
to help decrease the festival’s carbon footprint by watching emerging
artists on the solar-powered Panhandle Stage, choosing refillable water
bottles over plastic ones, recycling and composting their waste, biking,
carpooling or shuttling to the festival, and eating locally sourced
food from our farmers' market and restaurants.
This year, Eco Lands is very excited to introduce Farm
Lands,
a representation of San Francisco’s commitment to supporting urban
agriculture and partnering with local farmers. While visiting Farm
Lands, attendees will be able to visit three of San Francisco’s most
notable urban agriculture non-profits (Garden for the Environment,
Hayes Valley Farm and Urban Sprouts) that will offer a series of workshops
demonstrating how urban dwellers can grow fruits and vegetables. Next,
drop by the Full Belly Farms farmers’ market and sink your teeth
into delicious, seasonal, organic fruit including a variety of melons,
grapes, apples, and a mixed selection of nuts. Finally, enjoy eating
your fruit and resting your feet while sitting on the Farm Lands’ barnyard
bleachers, built out of 250 straw bales.
Eco Lands is also providing environmental educational and experiential
opportunities to Outside Lands’ attendees through partnerships with
local and national non-profit organizations that reflect diverse approaches
to improving and expanding environmental participation. Everyone can
lend a helping hand and mind in supporting the greening initiatives
of the festival...and we encourage you to BE the difference!

For the 4th year in a row the Panhandle Stage will be completely powered
by solar energy including all of the sound and lighting. If you want
to geek out on the engineering behind the solar powered stage, keep
on reading. The Panhandle Stage is powered by (2) 26-foot trailers
housing a 4 kW solar array. The solar supplies sunlight to (4) 800
Amp-Hour batteries. The array powers (8) Outback Systems Inverters
pumping 240 amps of power at 120 Volts. The system is engineered
to push Lab Gruppen amps powering (8) Sound Bridge double 18" Subs
with (6) per side Soundbridge Line Array Tops. Because we are using
solar, we are able to provide a true sine wave of 120 volts. We are
utilizing the platform of Outside Lands to demonstrate the direction
and alternatives to the way power can be produced for live music
events…welcome to the future. Thanks to our friends at Sustainable
Waves!

We are encouraging all concert attendees to choose refillable water
over plastic water bottles to cut down on the plastic consumption
and overall carbon footprint of the festival. For the third year
in a row, we are offering two different refillable water options:
either purchase a 2011 OSL stainless steel water bottle at a water
station or the merchandise booth and receive free refills of spring
water the entire festival or bring your own from home and purchase
the refills. If you bring your 2008, 2009, or 2010 OSL water bottle
drink for free all weekend long! The refillable water stations are
located in the Polo Field and Eco Lands. Thanks for supporting our
greening initiatives!

We have worked very hard over the past 4 years with the help of Clean
Vibes, San Francisco Conservation Corps and the San Francisco Department
of the Environment to achieve the highest possible waster diversion
rates. All of the cups, plates, bowls and utensils are 100% compostable
and bio-degradable at Outside Lands. Please make sure to put them
in the proper green bin marked “compost.” You can also look for our
Trash Talkers who will help point you in the right direction.
We had our most successful year in 2010 with diverting 76% of our
waste from landfills totaling nearly 30 tons of compost, recycling
and re-useable materials. This has set the bar for sustainable events.
Let’s all work together to make the mark even higher in 2011.

Full Belly Farm will be selling seasonal
melon slices, peaches, tomatoes, corn, green beans and bell peppers
at Farm Lands’ Market. Full Belly Farm is a 300-acre certified organic
farm located in the beautiful Capay Valley of Northern California,
an hour northwest of Sacramento. Full Belly has been farmed using organic
practices since 1985 and is certified by California Certified Organic
Farmers. The farm owners are Andrew Brait, Judith Redmond, Paul Muller,
and Dru Rivers. With help from about 45 to 55 employees, the farm produces
an amazing diversity of vegetables, herbs, nuts, flowers, and fruits
year-round. The farm also has a flock of chickens, a herd of sheep,
a tribe of goats, and several cows.

Riding your bike to Outside Lands is one of the easiest and greenest
ways to get to the festival. But it does have its drawbacks — namely,
what to do with the bike once you get there?
Esurance and the San Francisco Bike Coalition make it easy for you
to get Inside Outside and be green too! If you ride your bike to Outside
Lands, you’ll qualify for ultra-cool bike valet services. Just check
your bike in with a valet, get a claims ticket, and pick your bike
up at the end of the day. Easy.
Plus, you’ll earn Insider status, which you can parlay at the Esurance
Inside Outside lounge for a free tire repair kit, an Insider bandana,
and other cool stuff.

Instead of using golf carts to transport cargo for production, Eco
Lands will be utilizing Yuba Mundo Bicycles. Designed for environmentally
conscious individuals who want to lower their auto expenses, shrink
their carbon footprint and get healthy, the Mundo allows bicyclists
to accomplish tasks that previously required a car or truck. Shop
for groceries, pedal your children to school, carry a surfboard to
the beach, haul tools to the job site or pedal a keg to the party.
Like a minivan or pickup truck on two wheels, the Mundo makes errands
fun—minus the pollution and high cost.

of the landfill. Join Garden For the Environment for this mini-workshop
where you will learn the easy steps involved in setting up and maintaining
your own worm composting system at home. Rot On!
