ECO LANDS
Located in Speedway Meadow and powered entirely by solar energy, Eco Lands will once again be the epicenter of the Outside Lands’ sustainability mission and environmental commitment.  Over the past three years, Outside Lands has continued to implement innovative approaches to ensure the most environmentally sustainable event possible. Every single person attending Outside Lands will participate in decreasing the carbon footprint of the festival by checking out the hottest live acts featured on the solar-powered Panhandle Stage, choosing refillable water bottles over plastic ones, recycling and composting their waste, biking to the festival or picking up local food from our farmers' market and restaurants.

Eco Lands is also providing environmental educational and experiential opportunities to Outside Lands attendees through partnerships with local and national non-profit organizations that reflect diverse approaches to improving and expanding environmental participation.  Everyone can lend a helping hand and mind in supporting the greening initiatives of the festival...and we encourage you to BE the difference!  A special thanks to our green partners, Clif Bar, Merrell and PG&E.

PANHANDLE SOLAR STAGE

For the 3rd year in a row the Panhandle Stage will be completely powered by solar energy including all of the sound and lighting.  If you want to geek out on the engineering behind the solar powered stage keep on reading.  The Panhandle Stage is powered by 2.5 kW of solar, which supplies sunlight to (36) 6-volt batteries. The array powers (4) Outback Systems Inverters pumping 140 amps of power at 120 Volts. The system is engineered to push Lab Gruppen amps powering (10) Sound Bridge double 18" Subs with (8) per side NEXO Line Array Tops.  Because we are using solar, we are able to provide a true sign wave of 120 volts.  We are utilizing the platform of Outside Lands to demonstrate the direction and alternatives to the way power can be produced for live music events…welcome to the future. Thanks to our friends at Sustainable Waves!

REFILLABLE WATER PROGRAM
We are encouraging all concert attendees to choose refillable water over plastic water bottles to cut down on the plastic consumption and overall carbon footprint of the festival.  For the second year in a row, we are offering two different refillable water options: either purchase a 2010 OSL stainless steel water bottle at a water station or the merchandise booth and receive free refills of spring water the entire festival or bring your own from home and purchase the refills. If you bring your 2008 or 2009 OSL water bottle drink for free all weekend long!  The refillable water stations are located in the Polo Field and Eco Lands.  Thanks for supporting our greening initiatives!

WASTE DIVERSION
We have worked very hard over the past 2 years with the help of Clean Vibes, San Francisco Conservation Corps and the San Francisco Department of the Environment to achieve the highest possible waster diversion rates.  In 2009 we were up 4% to a 68% waste diversion rate from 2008 and hope that we can break that 70% mark this year with your help.  In addition to incorporating a refillable water program that cut down our plastic bottle consumption 60% last year and offering the interactive recycling store to reward folks that are helping to divert waste, all of the cups, plates, bowls and utensils are 100% compostable and bio-degradable.

NON-PROFIT PARTNERS
We would like to extend a special thanks to our environmental and education non-profit partners. Please click through the names below to find out more information about each organization and what they plan to bring to Outside Lands to engage you:

VALET BIKE PARKING POWERED BY CLIF BAR
Outside Lands, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and Clif Bar will be providing complimentary Valet Bike Parking service at Marx Meadow in Golden Gate Park near the festival entrance in Lindley Meadow. Think of it like a coat check for bikes—you don’t need to worry about the safety of your bike while you're out enjoying the music, just park your bike in the morning and then turn in your claim check when you’re heading home. Additional bike racks will be set up around the park for you if you bring your own lock.

TRASHed :: RECYCLING STORE
The TRASHed :: Recycling Store brought to you by Global Inheritance is an interactive recycling center powered by motivated people who recycle their empty plastic bottles/cans and compostable cups collected on-site in exchange for cool merchandise. The only currency the Recycling Store accepts is recyclable bottles/cans and compostable cups from Outside Lands, helping to keep the festival grounds spotless!

Based on the number of bottles, cans and cups you collect, you will be able to “buy” items that range in value. The TRASHed :: Recycling Store will be stocked with the following items exclusive Outside Lands merchandise (posters, water bottles, t-shirts & 2011 tickets), Treasure Island Music Festival tickets, Camelbak bags, Fuel TV skate decks, Netflix memberships, Loomstate jeans, Gregory backpacks and North Face gear (tents, sleeping bags and jackets).

URBAN GARDENING WORKSHOPS
Garden for the Environment, an environmental partner, will be hosting gardening workshops at Outside Lands!  Each mini-workshop will be held once on Saturday and once on Sunday and will take place in Eco Lands:

Home Composting with Worms
Jump-start your garden with some homemade compost! Aside from giving veggies and flowers a healthy start, composting encourages beneficial organisms in the soil and can help break the life cycle of pests and disease as well as keep valuable waste out of the landfill.   Join Garden For the Environment for this mini-workshop where you will learn the easy steps involved in setting up and maintaining your own worm composting system at home. Rot On!

Be a Victory Gardener: Grow Your Own Food
Reduce your ecological footprint, decrease your dependence on oil and increase your health and wellness all by starting a vegetable garden in your home or neighborhood!  Join Garden For the Environment for this mini-workshop and walk away with ideas of will what to plant, when to plant it and how to care for your vegetables organically!

CELL PHONE RECYCLING
Please bring in your old cell phone and visit the PlantMyPhone booth in Eco Lands.  PlantMyPhone will then responsibly recycle your phone and sell the recycled materials to fund tree planting. The average 2-year old cell phone will plant 15 trees.  In fact if you bring in a 1st Generation iPhone in good condition, 79 trees will be planted. It’s a win win for everyone.

OCEAN BEACH CLEAN UP – SATURDAY, AUGUST 14TH at 10AM
