We’ve always treated chefs like rock stars at Outside Lands, but it was the debut of GastroMagic in 2014 that really put them in the spotlight. More than just another stage, it’s a space where culinary personalities team up with musicians, comics and other surprise guests for once-in-a-lifetime shows you won’t find anywhere else.

It all started five years ago with a little stage in McLaren Pass, flanked by Bacon Lands and a few bars that would eventually evolve into Cocktail Magic. Food personalities like Chris Cosentino (Cockscomb), Antelmo Faria (Tacolicious) and Brandon Jew (Mister Jiu’s) joined forces with Holy Ghost!, Lewis Black and more for shows that were head-scratching, gut-busting and downright mouthwatering. As festival co-founder Kerry Black explained it, “We want to keep pushing the concept of food programming, making it fun and mixing it with music, comedy and art. GastroMagic is our test lab to continually innovate each year.”

By its second year, GastroMagic had already established itself as an essential part of the Outside Lands experience. Foodies swarmed the little grove to snag a primo spot (and, if they’re lucky, some tasty samples) at shows like Morimoto Karaoke, Breakdown Breakdance and Big Freedia’s Beignets & Bounce Brunch. Music and powdered sugar filled the air as we twerked up a storm and started a new festival tradition.

Repeat appearances from hometown favorites like Guittard Chocolate, Tacolicious and Humphry Slocombe put a new spin on classic San Francisco flavors, while some of our special guests proved that you should always expect the unexpected. Who could forget the Roy Choi-Deltron 3030 mashup or Action Bronson launching chicken parms to fans in trees?

Looking back at 2018, you could say our appetite grew… With a massive lineup that included Eddie Huang, Portugal. the Man, Bill Nye and Matty Matheson, it only made sense that GastroMagic needed a bigger stage! By adding screens and moving it down to Lindley Meadow, we’ve got room for even more at our table. Now, care to join us for dinner?
